Rapidly growing mid-size pickup truck class has many good and refreshed options to offer and it is surely hard decision what ute to pick. It probably depends from what you actually want to own. However, manufactures are trying to cover all kind of demands and they offer different versions of the same. Some will be more luxury oriented for those who are purchasing pickups as part of their life style and others for those that need truck for its main purposes, towing and hauling or in some cases for adventurous off-roading. Nissan has option for all mentioned cases and it is Nissan Frontier.

This model has been here since 1998 and since then it received serious redesign in 2005. Next notable upgrade came for 2009 year as mid-cycle refresh when off-road focused PRO-4X version was also introduced. Since then only mild upgrades have been promoted for this model and the same case is with 2016 model year. For this year model only several color options and sunroof has been added as standard for SV version. As for 2016 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X, this off-roader continues unchanged. On the other hand main Frontier’s rivals like 2016 Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon have been redesigned or upgraded. Yet, Frontier is still capable off-roader; it has strong V-6 engine and some other benefits.

2016 Nissan Frontier is offered with two engine options and available are 2.5 liter four cylinder engine and larger and more powerful 4.0 liter V-6 engine. However, for the 2016 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X, V-6 is standard. This engine has 24 valves and it is built of lightweight aluminum. This engine is capable to develop 261 horsepower and torque of 281 lb-ft. It can be opted with either standard six-speed manual transmission or option is five-speed automatic shifter. PRO-4X version features part time four-wheel drive with low-range transfer case. Models equipped with automatic transmission also includes hill descant control and hill start assist. PRO models is also armed with electronic locking rear differential, feature which when activated provides equal power for both rear wheels in order to boost traction when it is needed. For off-road duties PRO-4X model also exploits specially tuned suspension with proven Blistein shocks which provide optimal comfort and precise handling for all surfaces which Frontier attacks. Frontier also uses power steering system which is speed sensitive and according to vehicle’s speed steering can be adjusted to be more nimble at lower speeds and more rigid at higher speeds. Equipped with automatic transmission Frontier PRO-4X needs around 8.2 second to reach 60 mph. Manual transmission versions is rated at 18 mpg on combined basis or at 16 mpg in city and 21 mpg highway while with automatic gearbox EPA ratings drops to 17 mpg combined or 15/21 mpg city/freeway. This Frontier version towing capacity is rated up to 6,500 pounds. V-6 engine delivers good acceleration and has enough pulling power but falls behind rival V-6s as less efficient. On the other hand PRO-4X delivers good ride quality thanks to well-tuned suspension.

As it was mentioned earlier 2016 model years hasn’t brought any substantial enactments for Frontier and it continues visually unchanged as well. Even it is falling behind in many aspects behind redesigned models form rival companies as regards its exterior styling it achieves to stay competent in this context probably because it delivers enough modern and traditional cues in same time which make it fresh and appealing. Its appearance isn’t aggressive and rugged as found on other models but it is well-proportioned and with balanced sculpting. On its front side dominates V-molded grille flanked by squared head lights. Bellow sits well fitted bumper and it houses sharp fog lights. Notable on the 2016 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X version is also front skid plate which makes its appearance more aggressive. It also features almost carlike flared fenders and in case of PRO model it rides on 16-inch five-spoke aluminum alloys. The model measures 72, 8 inches in width; it is 205,5 inches long while height is 70,1 inch. The wheelbase is 125, 9 inches and ground clearance 8,6 inches.

Inside the cabin it isn’t so luxuries as some of rivals and it also includes a lot of hard plastic but interior is practical and comfortable. Dash is well-arranged and allows access to user-friendly center stack. The front seats are well-shaped and supportive stylized with PRO-4X trim. There is less room in rear seating row in case of extended cab models and this area is accessible through rear-hinged half doors. This area can be used as storage space or with available jump seats there is enough room for kids. There is more rear room and more practical rear bench in Crew Cab version. Crew cab models feature full size rear doors and space is adequate for small adults while rear bench has 60/40 split folding functionality.

Body Styles, Equipment

Extended Cab or the King Cab models come with a 6.1 foot cargo bed while Crew Cab configuration is available with standard 5-foot or it can be opted with 6.1 foot bed. PRO-4X trim is only available with four-wheel drive system and standard on this version are also a locking rear differential, off-road tires, skid plates, special suspension, and automatic headlights. Infotainment features in this trim include a 5.8 inch touch screen Nissan Connect interface, voice controls, navigation, satellite radio and Crew Cabs come with 10-speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system. With PRO-4X Luxury package we also get 8-way power driver’s seat and 4-way power adjustable passenger’s seat, leather upholstery, rear center armrest, heated outside mirrors, sunroof on crew cabs and roof rack with crossbars. The safety equipment includes Nissan Advanced air bag system, anti-lock disc brakes, stability controls, tire pressure monitoring system, rearview camera and rear parking sensors. Nissan Connect system can be had with emergency communication features like vehicle locator, remote alarm notification, automatic collision notification, etc.

Price and Conclusion

The main rivals of Nissan Frontier from Toyota and General Motors are already available with new designs and some of them with diesel engines. So, Frontier definitely lags behind and it is ready for redesign inside and out. However it could be good solution with when equipped with V-6 engine.
