2016 Nissan Navara: Review

The things are happening very fast in pickup truck industry, especially in the last two model years. We have witnessed many redesigned and refreshed vehicles that are more competent for stiff competition but new names are ready to enter in this segment as well.  Fords’ Ranger is refreshed, Mazda has also improved its BT-50, new Mitsubishi L200 is never better, Toyota’s Hilux shines and Amarok promises many upgrades. There is also Fiat’s Fullback coming into segment and we may even welcome Mercedes’ pickup truck in future years. Nissan Navara is another choice and this manufacturer has been in this segment over than 80 years building dependable and strong trucks. Nissan sells Frontier in US and in the almost all markets overseas we have Navara version.

This model has entered into the next generation since 2015 model year and new model pushed boundaries once more. Changes are obvious in almost all aspects although the 4WD system and chassis carried over. With this new generation, Nissan promises capable working truck which can also offer serious off-roading but crossover on-road manners as well. The Navara will also offer comfortable cabin equipped with smart electronics and modern exterior design as well. 2016 Nissan Navara will be available in many configurations combining two and four-wheel drive with three cabin styles and several trim options.

2016 Nissan Navara: Performance

On the performance ground, the 2016 Nissan Navara is available with three engine variants one petrol and two diesel versions. The petrol engine is only available on Single Cab DX models which are basic work trucks. This 2.5 liter four-cylinder displacement produces 163 HP (122 kW) at 6000 rpm and peak torque of 238 N at 4000 rpm. This is less costly engine compared to diesel alternatives and it is exclusively available with six-speed manual gearbox. The petrol engine delivers less power but is also thirstier option and according to Nissan it is rated at 9,9 liters per 100 km. More costly but more powerful and frugal as well is turbo diesel engine available in two variants across wide Navara’s lineup. DX and RX Navara models exploits  2.3 liter four-cylinder single turbo diesel engine which in this form develops around 160 HP (120 KW) at 3750 rpm and peak torque of 403 Nm from 1500-2500 rpm. Higher grades ST and ST-X use twin turbo diesel engine version which produces 187 HP (140 kW) and 450 Nm of torque. Both versions are standard with six-speed manual gearbox and alternative is seven-speed automatic transmission. Navara comes with two or electronically controlled four-wheel drive system and you can opt for rear differential lock as well.  The fuel efficiency varies across range depending on body style single or twin turbo engine and two- or four wheel drive system and as Nisan claims it can be as much low as 6.4 litters in most efficient configuration and no more then 7.0 liters per 100 km in other versions. In terms of towing and hauling, diesel powered models can tow up to 3,500 kg while petrol version is rated at 1588 kg.

The new Navara is planted on tough boxed chassis and also uses 4WD system from the previous generation model but steering and suspension have been upgraded for the new generation models. All models use independent double wishbone front suspension with stabilizer bar. On King Cab models rear suspension comprises old-school leaf springs while Double Cab models include new five link independent rear suspension. The result is more refined drive, and new Navara handles well compared to better suspended SUVs. Power steering is well-composed providing more responsive and better cornering.

2016 Nissan Navara: Exterior, Interior

From the visual point of view, the 2016 Nissan Navara has modern and attractive appearance despite is capable to tow and haul large loads. V-molded grille dominates up front with attractive headlamps on each side. The front bumper is well-shaped and it includes center opening and two slits for fog lights. Body lines and surfaces are subtitle rather than aggressive. Overall, new truck possess more balanced and less polarizing exterior look than some other rival models.

For the interior, Nissan says it is inspired with crossover design and indeed it seems that many interior features has been fitted from X-Trail model. Interior is well-arranged and functional as well and well equipped with many modern features. Finishes and build quality are good and higher grades have upscale treatment. The dash have clean design and controls are easy to use. Center stack includes information display and contrasting inserts. The seats are almost car-like and driving position is good as well.

Body styles, Trims

Single Cab, King Cab and Dual Cab Navaras are available. Single cab models come in cab on chassis form only. Two small rear seats are available in King Cab models while Dual Cabs have four conventional doors and seats for five. It comes in DX, RX, ST and ST-X trims. All trucks include audio system with at least four speakers or six in dual cabs and it is also controlled trough steering wheel mounted buttons. There is also air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming, etc. |DX models have vinyl floor and rides on 15-inch. RX is available with 16-inch steel wheels, carpet-covered floor, tinted side and rear windows, etc. A 16-inch alloys are standard on ST trim and stronger diesel engine. This trim also adds side steps, projector headlamps, fog lights, leather trimmed steering wheel, etc. Rear locking differential is available with 4WD ST models. On ST-X trim, Navara offers leather seats, power adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual zone climate control, power sunroof, etc. This version also include seven-inch Nissan connect screen with satellite navigation. Nissan Connect system also provide smartphone integration in ST and ST-X model. ST-X models rides on 18-inch alloy wheels. The safety covers seven airbags, daytime running lights, electronic traction and stability control, cruise control, forward emergency braking, rear parking sensors, etc. Rearview camera is available on ST and ST-X trims. 4WD ST-X models also have Hill start assist and Hill Descant control.

2016 Nissan Navara: Price

The 2016 Nissan Navara is better equipped model and offers also good handling, comfort and strong diesel engine. It is available from $19,500 in base variant and its price reaches $52,000 for top ST-X version.
