2017 GMC Canyon Denali: Review

If you don’t need the capability of the full-size truck or you may be take them as too big or cumbersome and something more manageable and fuel-efficient is what you are looking for, the mid-size pickup class is where you should find adequate solution. The GMC Canyon is vehicle of that type and other alternatives are models like Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, etc. The GMC Canyon came completely new for 2015 model year after a two year absence. Since this reintroduction it has been rumored that company will soon offer a premium-grade Denali version and it was confirmed at the last Los Angeles auto Show where 2017 GMC Canyon Denali was unveiled.

Until now, premium luxury versions have been something that is reserved for full-size trucks like Ford’s the King Ranch trim or Ram’s the Longhorn models and Canyon Denali is the first mid-size model offering premium luxury grade. Other GMC’s models with Denali treatment are proven as good sellers with roughly 25 percent of total sales and it is also expected with a new Canyon model. So, with new Denali model we will get the truck which offer upscale amenities and features that are optional or even unavailable on other trims, special treatment on its exterior, and two powertrain options which include one diesel option.

The 2017 GMC Canyon Denali comes with both rear- and all-wheel drive versions and 4WD models include electronically controlled transfer case. However, this top trim model outflanks the base 2.5 liter petrol-powered inline four engine and comes with either V-6 petrol or with four-cylinder turbo diesel engine. The standard variant for Canyon Denali is familiar 3.6 liter V-6 petrol engine with 305 HP and 269 pound-feet of torque. It is matched with a six-speed automatic transmission and this combination can tow up to 7,000 pounds while payload peak is 1,590 pounds. The engine features good and brisk acceleration but it isn’t so smooth and quiet. For four-wheel drive models the score drops to 17 mpg city and 24 mpg freeway. The alternative for this engine is a long awaited 2.8 liter four-cylinder Duramax trubodiesel engine which nets 181 HP and impressive torque of 369 pound-feet. It is also teamed with a six-speed automatic gearbox and it can be also chosen with either 2WD or 4WD. A 2WD Duramax powered models will be able to tow up to 7,700 pounds while 4WD versions will allow 100 pounds less. Diesel powertrain is expected to return 22 mpg in city and 31 mpg in highway drive in 2WD guise while 4WD configuration scores 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

From the Canyon model you should expect well-tuned ride and handling while the suspension will set straight most of the bumps. It also features well-weighted steering which is precise and responsive but like in the other body-on frame based vehicles some motions will be felt inside the cabin. As we mentioned V-6 petrol engine isn’t so quiet while accelerating and downshifting can be slow. However, the turbodeisel engine is very quiet and thanks to plenty of the available torque the gearbox doesn’t need to downshift as often as the petrol engine.

The visual aspect doesn’t present some major body changes in terms of dimensions or shapes. Yet, it brings many bright accents and bold forms in order to highlight its upscale class. On the front side dominates bright mesh grille which distinguishes it from other lower grade versions. The model like the SLT versions includes HID headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. More chrome is present on fog lamp bezels, then on the assist steps, side mirrors, door handles and bumpers. Ultra-bright aluminum wheels with 20-inch in diameter are also featured on the new 2017 GMC Canyon Denali model as well as a polished exhaust pipe. The model also has a spray-on bed liner and three-dimensional Denali signature attached on the tailgate. The model is available in seven color options.

It includes the latest IntelliLink infotainment system which brings an eight-inch touchscreen, navigation, and it supports smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple Car Play functionality. OnStar system enhances connectivity capabilities and there is also remote start and lock functionality as well as 4G LTE service with WiFi hotspot. The model also offers automatic climate control, heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, illuminated sill plates, Bose 7-speaker sound system, etc. On the safety front, the standard are lane departure warning and forward collision alert.
