2017 Jeep Gladiator: News, Possible Design and Powertrains

You probably can remember Jeep’s Gladiator Concept model that this brand shown in 2005. The model was based on Ram 1500’s platform and brand presented this model as a lifestyle pickup truck that features the capabilities of the popular Wrangler.  Well, according to some reports, we might soon see production version which should be based on the next-generation long wheelbase Wrangler while its styling should be very close to what we saw on the mentioned concept model. In same context it might also be called 2017 Jeep Gladiator.

A new Wrangler-based truck has been said to arrive in showrooms sometime in 2017 probably as the 2017 model and may be named after the Gladiator concept model. On the other hand some sources claim that more likely we would see this pickup as the 2018 model. However, it should be build alongside with new generation Wrangler model in Toledo, Ohio.

The 2017 Jeep Gladiator would surely be welcomed addition to highly popular pickup segment and if it would take the form that is speculated it might experience popularity that might surpass the Wrangler model on which it should be based.

Two models should share the same body-on-frame design and most of the running gear. As we said, the Gladiator truck should ride on Wrangler’s long wheelbase while it should also adopt aluminum based body panels and very similar styling except it will get cargo bed.

Aluminum should be used for the hood, doors and rear gate and with that models will benefit from reduced weight which will have positive impact to the fuel economy and performance.

The interior of the Jeep’s truck is also expected to get very similar form as the next Wrangler. That will include upgraded materials, infotainment system and more safety features compared to what we get with the current Wrangler version.

2017 Jeep Gladiator: Powertrains

When it comes to engine options we can’t tell anything for sure but just like the next-generation Wrangler, the new 2017 Jeep Gladiator should be powered with both diesel and gasoline fueled engines.

Gasoline powered engines should offer a new turbocharged four-cylinder unit with power that reaches 300 hp. A 3.6 liter V-6 that should be gasoline alternative and with power output that exceeds capabilities of the current Pentastar engine that powers the actual Wrangler model.

On the other hand, for the diesel version we should expect a 3.0 liter V-6 EcoDiesel from the Ram 1500 and similar output of 240 hp and 420 pound-feet of torque.

Transmission options should include a new ZF eight-speed automatic unit while we might also get a 6-speed manual shifter.

The 2017 Jeep Gladiator might come sometime in 2017 but its release might also be delayed for the 2018 model year.

Its rivals should be mid-size models that come from Chevrolet, Toyota and GMC.
