After Ford redesigned its Super-Duty truck series and Chevrolet upgraded its Duramax turbo diesel engine, the next move is expected from the Ram heavy-duty trucks. However, Ram is still mysterious and doesn’t reveal any information. It isn’t also clear what Ram has in plans with its light-duty Ram 1500 after Ford revealed refreshed F-150.
As some reports suggest, Ram will delay redesign of its truck models despite upgraded and redesigned rivals for the next model years. In that context, we should expect that Ram will first launch redesigned Ram 1500 and heavy-duty models will follow after. So, Ram 2500 and 2018 Ram 3500 will get a full redesign in next two or three model years but before that, we should expect to upgrade turbo diesel engine.
2018 Ram 3500: Styling
As the things now stand, the 2018 Ram 3500 won’t introduce any significant change regarding its styling. The cross-hair grille remains dominating element on model’s exterior and it comes in several variants depending on the trim. Muscular hood, headlights and bumpers should continue in the same form and exterior changes could only include the new color options and wheel design.
Interiors of Ram trucks are well-designed and versatile. These trucks are comfortable and provide durable and different material solutions. Interior controls are also well-defined and easy to use. What is also an advantage of Ram trucks, is the great Uconnect infotainment system.
In this aspect, the Ram 3500 won’t also change for the new model year expect the newest version of infotainment platform and revised trim features.
Again, this truck will be available in many configurations. Three cab styles, two bed lengths, at least six trim levels, three engine options will be available. Plus, it is possible that Ram would introduce the new special edition version which would keep buyer’s focus until the redesign.
2018 Ram 3500: Powertrains
While the exterior and interior of the 2018 Ram 3500 will likely continue unchanged some upgrades are possible in the engine lineup. Ram was spotted testing the Cummins powered truck suggesting that the 6.7-liter could be upgraded to return the best torque title. Ford’s 6.7-liter turbodiesel is now the heavy-duty leader with the 440 hp and 925 lb-ft of torque. Chevy’s 6.6-liter Duramax diesel can now produce 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. With the Ram’s current best of 385 hp and 900 lb-ft of torque this truck gets the third position. We hope that 2018 model could return its glory. It’s not clear would Ram’s 6.7-liter diesel six-cylinder be improved and how much but it might be the first truck to reach 1000 lb-ft of torque.
On the other hand, two other engine options will likely continue unchanged. The 5.7-liter V-8 can produce 383 hp and 400 pound-feet of twisting. This engine is paired to six-speed automatic transmission. The 6.4-liter V-8 returns 410 hp and torque of 429 lb-ft.
2018 Ram 3500: Availability, Price
The launch of 2018 Ram 3500 should be available by the end of this year. The price will stay close to the current range.
