The 2015 Detroit Auto show was a venue where Hyundai shown its idea about compact pickup truck in form of the Hyundai Santa Cruz Concept. Ever since this truck has been expected to be announced for the production and it seems now that is close to get green light. Namely, based on internal studies this product has potential to be sold in 50, 000 units per year while other reports suggest even bigger number which reaches 70, 000. What is more, some reports suggesting that that company has made decision and it just matter of time when this truck will be announced. At best we might see the 2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz sometime next year.
What is it?
An upcoming Santa Cruz will adopt unibody design in form of compact pickup truck which will have more manageable size than full-sizers. With mid-size proportions it will be alternative for SUV’s rather than for full-size trucks and it will aim better fuel efficiency and driving dynamics than traditional utes.
2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz: Design
While some sources claim that decision about design of 2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz has already been made nothing has officially been said. However, when it comes to its exterior styling there is no doubt that this model will be heavily influenced with mentioned concept model. Of course like every production version it will get much toned down design but some cues will be inherited.
Up front it will include some interpretation of the hexagonal grille either with mesh or slat pattern. Slender headlights with LED DRLs will sit on each side and sculpted hood and front bumper will get softer design compared to the concept model.
It not clear what body styles and bed lengths it will offer but we bet on crew cab body style with four conventional doors rather than rear hinged doors on the concept.
On the other hand what is sure, this truck will choose unibody platform instead of body-on-frame design. It will actually use the version of platform that underpins the Tuscon SUV. With that it promises car or SUV like driving quality and better fuel economy which will come at cost of reduced towing and off-road capability.
Nothing has been said about its interior but considering that it will use Tucson’s platform we expect very similar interior layout and equipment offer like in this model. That suggests similar tech as well as safety features.
2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz: Powertrains
What will power the new 2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz is still unknown fact. Under the hood of the concept model Hyundai planted a 2.0 turbodiesel engine with ability to produce around 190 hp and torque of 300 pound-feet. The HTRAC all-wheel drive has also been used in this model and claimed fuel economy is around 35 mpg.
The production version is also expected to be offered with diesel engine but with petrol as well. It might use improved Tucson’s gasoline engine and transmission system. In addition to mentioned HTRAC four-wheel drive system, production version will also get two-wheel drive option.
2017 Hyundai Santa Cruz: Arrival, Price
According to some reports we should expect this model to be shown at some Auto Show in 2017. However, it would go on sale as 2018 or even as 2019 model. About its price has been said that base version would be priced around $25, 000.
