The pickup truck segment is growing constantly as well as the demand for this kind of vehicle. However, the trucks are also evolving to more premium vehicles with many passenger cars like characteristics. Still, there are few more-rugged and well-priced models on the global market which are surely worth looking. Mazda offers the mid-size BT-50 and this truck is designed to get the job done while also delivers some level of refinement but not as much as the class leaders. Mazda refreshed this model for the 2016 version but since then appeared many more premium versions including the redesigned Ford Ranger. The BT-50 shares the bones with the previous Ranger generation but struggles to catch the sales of the top-class models.
However, Mazda will try to push the new-generation version upmarket with more premium design and features and that was confirmed by the company. For the breakthrough, Mazda will change the course and the new model will be designed in association with the Isuzu. So, the new-gen BT-50 will discontinue Ranger’s platform and will adopt the exterior design similar to what we get in brand’s newest SUVs. But the next iteration of the Mazda ute is still far from the debut. At best, the new truck will arrive in late 2019 but might also wait for the next-decade launch. What is sure, however, Mazda won’t make upgrades to the current version before the all-new model arrives and the 2019 Mazda BT-50 will return in the familiar form.
2019 Mazda BT-50: Styling
When it comes to styling, the 2019 Mazda BT-50 will continue to cruise with its “smiley face”. The polarizing front-end styling stands out this truck from others and the model also has a uniquely sculpted profile. This styling doesn’t fit with brand’s latest design language and that is about to change with the new-generation BT-50. Mazda will go with a more aggressive design with more dynamic lines and the front-end styling that is closer to the look of Mazda’s SUV models.
While the 2019 version won’t bring any notable upgrade the new-gen BT-50 will also change structurally. The model will switch from Ranger’s architecture to Isuzu’s.
The cabins of the 2019 BT-50 will also return in the familiar form. The truck has simple in-cab design but delivers high-level of passenger comfort and offers useful equipment. The controls are also well arranged and easy to use. Truck’s Alpine infotainment platform also works well but doesn’t support Apple Car Play and Android Auto functionalities. The truck also missing modern, active safety systems and the new generation model will surely address these problems.
The 2019 BT-50 will, however, arrive in many options and with useful features. The model will offer 8-inch touchscreen option, dual-zone climate control, USB and 12V outlets, rearview camera, six-speaker sound system, etc.
2019 Mazda BT-50: Engine options
Under the hood of the 2019 Mazda BT-50 will again be familiar engine options. The well-proven 3.2-liter five-cylinder turbodiesel will provide 197 horsepower (147kW) at 3000 rpm. The max torque of 470 Nm will be achievable between 1750 and 2500 rpm. Mazda will deliver this engine with the six-speed automatic transmission.
The Bt-50 will also have another engine option but the five-cylinder turbodiesel is a definitely better solution. A 2.2-liter diesel makes 147 hp and torque of 275 Nm.
The 2019 BT-50 won’t meet the level of refinement of the class leaders but will match the towing capability of these models. The most capable version will tow up to 3, 500 kg. The payload limit will be just below 1, 400 kg.
2019 Mazda BT-50: Arrival, Price
With no significant upgrades, the 2019 Mazda BT-50 will stay well-priced truck and close to the current price range. The model will go on sale late in the year.
