For the serious towing and loading demands buyers must step up from the best-selling half-ton segment to the higher ground where the heavy-duty models will get the job done. And if the Ram trucks are what you prefer the three-quarter-ton Ram 2500 will almost double the towing capacity compared to the recently all-new, light-duty Ram 1500. Like the better-selling, half-ton Ram, the first in the heavy-duty range Ram also comes in a number of options and offer great comfort and tons of available equipment. Still, if you need the most capable Ram 2500 it must have the proven Cummins Turbo Diesel under the hood.
And while the Ram 1500 is reimagined for the 2019 model year, the heavy-duty model is now undergoing testing and should appear in the redesigned form for the 2020 model year. We expect to see the similar recipe applied to the new-gen, heavy-sizers as on the light-duty model regarding the styling, interior and equipment. Expect also to see the repeat of the 6.4-liter V-8 gas power and the Cummins Diesel but with improved performance.
On the other hand, closer to the launch is the 2019 Ram 2500 Diesel and there won’t be much new on this model. Some changes in the equipment range will be on the menu and several new options while substantial upgrades will arrive with the new-gen model.
2019 Ram 2500 Diesel: Design
The 2019 Ram 2500 Diesel will be the repeat of the current styling and if you can’t imagine the Ram truck without the signature crosshair grille the 2019 model will likely be the last year with this recognizable feature. As the new Ram 1500 made radical styling changes and ditched the crosshair style the same should be with the new-generation heavy-sizers. They should also go with the streamlined contours and lose some of the current rugged looks.
The 2019 version will, however, keep the current muscular look and again change the grille version and the finish depending on the chosen trim option. The black grille and bumpers on the base model will get the shiny finish on other trims or the bumpers will come with the body color treatment depending on the version. The wheel size and design will also change with the version and Ram will likely offer the new options and body color choices.
The interior design will also return in the same form for the 2019 version while similar changes will appear in the new generation version as we can see in the redesigned light-duty Ram.
The cabin of the Ram trucks is quiet and model has easy-to-use controls and buttons. The Uconnect system is also the model’s bright side while the material quality improves with the upper grades.
The base model delivers the basics like the vinyl upholstery, air conditioning, six speakers, 17-inch wheels, etc. The SLT version adds 18-inch wheels, power and heated mirrors, carpets, cloth upholstery, 5-inch interface, etc.
The Big Horn boots with the 18-inch alloys, fog lights, upgraded cloth upholstery, chrome accents, power driver seat, etc. The Laramie is a big step forward with the leather upholstery, memory setting, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, an 8.4-inch infotainment system, parking sensors, and more.
The Laramie Longhorn has above previous the upgraded leather upholstery, heated rear seats, bucket front seats, wood accents, etc. The Limited builds up with the 20-inch wheels, special leather padding, more chrome elements, etc.
The Ram 2500 will again have six airbags, rearview camera and parking sensors while active safety systems like the automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, etc. will wait for the next generation to appear.
2019 Ram 2500 Diesel: Powertrain, Towing
The Ram 2500 will return with three engine options, two gas and proven turbo diesel. The 2019 Ram 2500 Diesel will again rely on the legendary 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 engine.
When paired with the six-speed manual gearbox this engine will provide 350 hp and torque of 660 lb-ft. The heavy-duty, six-speed automatic transmission will improve to 370 horsepower while the torque goes up to 800 lb-ft.
The diesel-powered Ram 2500 provide the best towing among the engine options with the limit at 17, 980 pounds. The max gas towing is 16, 320 pounds while the max payload is 3, 990 pounds. The Cummins engine allows up to 3, 160 pounds in the cargo bed.
2019 Ram 2500 Diesel: Availability, Price
The 2019 Ram 2500 Diesel should hit the market this fall. While the base Ram 2500 will start at around $32, 500, the Cummins engine will be the costly option and the models with this engine will cost around $41, 000.
