2020 Chevy Silverado SS: Rumors, Design, Release

The pickup trucks continue their perennial domination on the sales charts in the US. After the recent redesign of the GM’s light-duty and HD models and the arrival of the refreshed Ford F-Series, it’s harder than ever for the buyers to pick the right version among the ever-growing range of variants.  Chevy’s fourth-generation Silverado 1500 is available in dozens of options and there are just six powertrain choices. The trim range covers also everting from the work-oriented machines over the off-road-focused versions to richly equipped top trims. Picking either diesel or petrol engine or weighing between the turbocharged or non-turbo V-8 is also a hard decision and then one should consider among numerous optional features.

However, the rumors are spreading that Chevy might expand the range of the light-duty Silverado even more and they are suggesting the 2020 Chevy Silverado SS version. This is the nameplate that already existed in the model’s portfolio and it is the high-performance version with the on-road oriented design. The off-road equipped models are the fast sellers these days but the on-road focused variant could also get attention from the buyers.

Chevy hasn’t commented on the rumors about the reintroduction of the SS version and the prototype model wasn’t also spotted on the road with the design suggesting the arrival of new sports variant. The rumors suggest, however, that Chevy will apply a similar recipe as before but adopted to the new-generation version.

2020 Chevy Silverado SS

2020 Chevy Silverado SS: Design

The fourth-generation Silverado 1500 is designed around the new lightweight material-intensive chassis providing an improved structural rigidity and contributing to the reduced weight. The resculpted body has more dynamic profile lines and overall more aerodynamic shape. Restyled grille, headlights, bumpers and tailgate are also part of the model’s new identity.

As the rumors suggest, the 2020 Chevy Silverado SS should build atop the current design with a more aggressive and sports style. The model is expected to come with the more muscular hood combined with the dark-themed grille and body-color bumpers. Adding to the model’s sports appearance should also be unique 20-inch aluminum wheels and attractive graphic details. The sport-tuned suspension should also keep the model lower to the ground.

Interior, Equipment:

The cabin of the rumored Silverado SS should keep the things on the same place as the newest version but add several unique details. The sports seats with unique padding and logos should be part of the equipment. There should also be unique trim details on the dash, center console, and door panels. Further, Chevy should install a sports steering wheel and instrument cluster in the SS version.

If this version sees the light of the day, it will also come with the brand’s newest infotainment system and active safety systems. There would also be a premium sound system, navigation, and more. Chevy will likely offer the model with the cloth upholstery with the available upgrade to the leather padding.

2020 Chevy Silverado SS: Performance

Chevy has been in the news lately with the focus on the Power Stroke diesel engine. The oil burner makes 250 hp and torque of 440 pound-feet and delivers 25 mpg of the combined fuel economy. But if the 2020 Chevy Silverado SS arrives at dealers, the model won’t be available with this engine as the reports claim.

Under the hood of the sports Silverado SS version should be a 6.2-liter V-8 engine with expected upgrades to produce more than current 420 hp and torque of 460 pound-feet. In the mix with the V-8 engine will be a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The model should also get a unique suspension setup to boost on-road handling. There won’t be high suspension travel like on the off-road versions yet the model will sit lower to the ground. The SS version would also come with the upgraded braking system and low-profile tires. Both two- and all-wheel drive should be available.

The previous version of the model used a 6.0-liter Vortec High-Output V-8 engine with the output rated at 345 hp and torque of 380 pound-feet. The SS themed truck was marketed with the torsion bar suspension setup which should provide better handling.

2020 Chevy Silverado SS: Release, Price

The 2020 Chevy Silverado SS seems like a good idea but there is no solid evidence that Chevy is prepping this version. The on-road oriented Silverado would likely find more buyers than the previous version but it’s not clear would there be enough sales to justify the return of the model.

The rumors claim that SS themed Silverado should appear in the first half of the next year and the price could be in the 40, 000 range.
