The pickup trucks have become the common sight on the roads around the globe and expect more to appear in the future. With the proliferation of the pickup trucks, the brands are also building more sophisticated and better-equipped models and we saw recently refreshed Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton and other models equipped with many technologies that were common for the passenger cars. Another truck model which should soon enter the new generation and arrive in more refined form and equipped with the most recent technologies is the mid-size Isuzu D-Max.
The Japanese carmaker has been spotted recently while testing the near-production prototype of the Isuzu D-max and the reports indicating the debut of the model late in the year. The redesigned model should be marketed as the 2020 Isuzu D-Max and should elevate the level of the refinement and equipment availability. The model will get a redesigned platform and a more rugged appearance as the available details suggest.
The third-generation Isuzu D-max is expected to keep a recently introduced 1.9L turbodiesel four-cylinder engine and appear in many styles and equipment groups. There will again be single, extended and double cab styles and trim options ranging from the base work version with plastic bumpers to more refined and embellished variants.
The new generation Isuzu D-Max will also spawn a new, seven-seat MU-X SUV but will also share the parts with the next-iteration Mazda BT-50. Mazda’s truck will end the cooperation with Ford and will use Isuzu’s platform and running gear.
2020 Isuzu D-Max: Platform, Design
The redesigned 2020 Isuzu D-Max is getting closer to the debut and recently spotted prototype model reveals some styling changes and hints also what structural upgrades the new model brings. Based on what we know so far, the third generation Isuzu D-max will be based on the evolution of the current body-on-frame construction. The model will also keep a similar shape and we can’t detect radical changes in size.
However, judging by the spy phots the new Isuzu D-Max will have more aggressive styling following the trends in the industry. It seems that the prototype has enlarged grille design combined with the new headlights with the U-shaped LED signature lights. The truck has also more raked windshield and the shape of the fenders also look different.
The rear section will also get the makeover with the new tailgate and rear bumper.
Expect also redesigned interior with the new dash design and textures and higher quality surfaces. The model will get the upgraded infotainment system with modern connectivity features. The truck is also expected to expand the range of safety equipment with the new crash avoidance technologies. Available should be automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
The most basic version of the truck will include LED daytime running lights, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, electronic windows, etc.
The upper grades will add more sophistication including alloy wheels, larger center display, sat-nav, DAB radio, leather treated steering wheel, upgraded upholstery, etc. The range-topping versions will boost the comfort and tech availability with the leather upholstery, heating features, contrasting trim accents, and more.
2020 Isuzu D-Max: Powertrain
The Isuzu D-Max introduced a new 1.9-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine for the 2017 mid-update and this more refined and efficient than the 2.5D unit it replaced should again appear in the new generation 2020 Isuzu D-Max. Some markets should again get a current 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine.
The RZ4E-TC 1.9-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine provides 163 hp at 3, 600 rpm in the current form. The peak torque of the engine is 350 Nm from 2, 000-2,600 rpm but there could be some performance upgrades.
The reports indicate also that truck could also install a coil-spring rear suspension as an option on the new generation Isuzu D-Max.
The truck will also offer two- and four-wheel drive options and versions with the raised suspension and upgraded off-road gear. It will also provide payload capacity in excess of 1, 000 kg and towing limit around 3, 500.
2020 Isuzu D-Max: Arrival, Price
The new 2020 Isuzu D-Max will again be available in a variety of cab and trim options and should lose the camo by the end of the year. The on-sale date will be in 2020. More sophisticated design and modern tech and safety equipment should lift the price slightly.
