Kia is a rapidly growing brand and like every major carmaker these days, the South Korean automobile giant is prioritizing the crossover and SUV market. Kia released recently the all-new and largest Kia SUV ever, the Telluride. The brand is also working on the new generation Kia Sorento which should hit the market as the 2021 version. However, Kia also has an eye on another lucrative segment and we are speaking south pickup trucks. The news comes from Kia Australia’s Chief who sad that Kia pickup truck is underway and the brand expects about 10 percent market share in Australia.
Yes, Kia has the Australian market as the priority and there are no signs yet that truck would reach the US market. Kia’s official hasn’t revealed much more details but mentioned the possible launch around 2022-23.
Kia’s truck is hardly a surprise as we already have heard speculations about this possibility since Hyundai presented the Santa Cruz Concept and announced the production version. And there are conflicting reports about Kia’s future truck design. Some reports claim that truck will use the underpinning and powertrains from the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The opposite reports suggest that Kia truck won’t be another lifestyle model like the Santa Cruz yet more rugged, off-road model available in single- and dual-cab forms and with both petrol and diesel powertrains.
In any case, the Kia Pickup Truck is welcomed and until more details appear about the model, we already have some speculative renderings about the model’s possible design and powertrains if it would come as the 2020 Kia Pickup Truck.
2020 Kia Pickup Truck: Possible Design
Kia hasn’t yet confirmed what approach the new pickup truck will adopt but the recently launched, three-row Telluride SUV seems like a perfect candidate to get the pickup truck sibling. The new Telluride is similarly sized as the Pilot SUV which has the derived pickup truck version. The model shares the platform with the Hyundai’s new, mid-size Palisade SUV which could, in turn, be the base of the Santa Cruz pickup truck.
So, the easiest way for Kia is to transform the large Telluride to the pickup form and reduce the development process and cost. The Telluride’s rugged appearance would also fit nicely to the truck form similarly as Honda transformed the mid-size Pilot to in unibody Ridgeline truck. The latest Kia’s SUV is based on the brand’s newest design language which will also proliferate to future models and the pickup truck is also the candidate.
The new brand design is defined with the wider and sleek “tiger nose” grille and new-style headlights. The square body lines would also be applied to the truck model.
If the 2020 Kia Pickup Truck would appear on the market soon, the model would share a similar interior design with the Telluride SUV.
The large SUV has a clean interior almost a car-like. The model can be had with either 8-inch touchscreen interface or with the larger 10.3-inch unit. Buyers can also demand a leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, wireless charging and more. The large SUV offers also modern crash avoidance safety systems.
The Kai Pickup Truck is also expected to offer similar equipment list as the brand’s largest SUV.
2020 Kia Pickup Truck: Powertrains
Kia’s official hinted that truck will offer both petrol and diesel powertrain options for the Australian market. There are no signs that model will be available in other markets and in the case of the US version the diesel option wouldn’t be the part of the equipment list.
As a solution for the base engine, Kia could use a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with the power output around 235 horsepower. The 2020 Kia Pickup Truck could also appear with the 3.8-liter V-6 unit form the Telluride SUV. This engine makes 291 hp and torque of 262 pound-feet and comes paired to the 8-speed automatic transmission.
The model will offer both two- and four-wheel drive options. The off-road-ready version is also possible.
2020 Kia Pickup Truck: Release, Price
The speculative 2020 Kia Pickup Truck based on the recent Telluride SUV would likely start above $30, 000.
Based on what Kia hinted so far, the launch of the pickup truck is expected for 2022 or 2023.
