The new generation Nissan Frontier is getting closer to its long-awaited reveal as the latest reports indicate. The model should debut sometime in 2020 and can reach the market as the 2020 or 2021 model. Serval sources suggest the debut in September 2020 which would mean the arrival as the 2021 version.
In any case, the new Frontier will face with the growing number of the mid-size models and should respond with the modernized styling and interior. It’s not the secret that Nissan is working on the new V-6 petrol engine for the Frontier and Titan trucks but the rumors are spreading that 2020 Nissan Frontier Diesel could appear as well. Nissan hasn’t confirmed this but diesel-powered versions continue to proliferate in the full-size and mid-size segments and the new Frontier could also benefit from more efficient and torquier variant as well.
2020 Nissan Frontier Diesel: Powertrain
More SUVs and trucks in the US are appearing with diesel option under the hood and the all-new, full-size Ram 1500, Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra will offer diesel-powered versions. The mid-size Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon have been praised for its efficient and capable 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel and newcomers in the segment should also go with the diesel unit. The reintroduced Ford Ranger could get a 2.0-liter turbo-4 diesel unit as some sources suggest while Jeep Gladiator should gain a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 with the output around 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque.
The recent reports haven’t specified what diesel engine could finish under the hood of the 2020 Nissan Frontier Diesel if it appears. On the one hand, the third generation Frontier could adopt a 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine from the globally successful Navara with some upgrades to meet the emission standards in the US. This engine equipped with two turbos provides 190 hp in the Navara.
On the other hand, the sources suggest a possible adoption of the 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel engine. Nissan already used this solution in the prototype model from the 2014 Chicago Auto Show. If this turns out to be true, the engine should provide around 200 horsepower and torque on the mid-300 lb-ft scale.
The new Frontier should also get a new 3.0-liter V-6 petrol engine with the power production around 300 hp. This should come as the replacement for the aging 4.0-liter V-6 which makes 261 hp. The new 7-speed automatic transmission should also provide smoother performance.
2020 Nissan Frontier Diesel: Design
The new Frontier is edging closer to the reveal but we still have limited details about the new model. The newest info suggests that the third-generation Frontier won’t use the platform from the global Navara model as was expected so far. The model should again be based on the F-Alpha truck platform which should undergo serious re-engineering.
The styling of the 2020 Nissan Frontier Diesel and other versions should also be heavily modernized. The prototype models haven’t yet been spotted on the roads but the new truck should use the brand’s newest design language. Like the new SUVs in the brand’s lineup, the truck should adopt a new version of the V-motion grille and modern, sharp-looking headlights. The body panel should also form a sleeker appearance while we don’t know about possible dimension changes and weight reduction.
The new Frontier and possible diesel version will also boost the quality of the used materials and comfort level. The newest tech and safety features will also appear with the redesigned Frontier.
There will be a new dash design with the large center screen in the middle and redesigned instrument panel.
Nissan will likely increase interior comfort with more space inside the cabin and new comfort equipment. The safety aspect should also benefit from the advanced safety technologies for which this brand is already well known.
The new Frontier will again offer the off-road ready Pro-4X version which adds off-road-tuned shocks, skid plates, knobby tires and locking differential to the equipment list. With the diesel engine under the hood, the Pro-4X could earn new fans.
2020 Nissan Frontier Diesel: Release, Price
More details should appear soon about the new Frontier and its release date and price. Nissan will try to keep the price of the model as its strong selling point. The 2020 Nissan Frontier Diesel would cost a few thousands more than the petrol-powered version if it appears.
