The fierce battle in the half-ton pickup truck segment entered the new chapter in higher pace with the arrival of the redesigned Ram 1500, Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 recently. FCA surprised with the level of the changes applied to the new generation Ram 1500 and the model even abandoned the signature crosshair grille style. But what more important, the newest generation Ram 1500 is much more sophisticated with the sleeker styling, high-quality interior, loads of modern tech features and more efficient, mild-hybrid powertrains.
The modern Ram 1500 can again be had in a high number of configurations depending on the body style, bed size, powertrain and trim option. The model can take the form of the off-roader or maximize the comfort and available equipment in the top Limited version. However, even the base Tradesman version will equip a number of goodies combined with durable materials and different powertrain options and still look attractive despite the lack of many chrome details.
The 2020 Ram 1500 Tradesman will again be available in the same form as the 2019 version and diesel engine which should appear for the new model year won’t likely be available in this combination. Ram might add new color options and wheel design to the equipment list of the base Ram 1500 but there won’t be many novelties for the new model year.
2020 Ram 1500 Tradesman: Design
Like every fifth generation Ram 1500, the 2020 Ram 1500 Tradesman will also get attention with its smooth new look but won’t try to be the star of the show with the tons of chrome. The Tradesman uses black grille version in the combination with automatic headlights and daytime running lights. The black color will also dominate on the front and rear bumpers and truck will use 18-inch steel wheels with all-season tires. The model will also offer optional, black tubular steps as well as deployable rear step.
The Tradesman will be available in two cab styles including a Quad Cab and full-size rear door Crew Cab. There will also be a standard size bed with the Quad Cab and both short and standard beds with Crew Cab models.
Inside the cabin of the fifth generation Ram 1500, passengers will enjoy high comfort thanks to the size increase for the new generation version, especially in the Crew Cab body style. The Ram 1500 has also well organized and placed controls and the center stack is easy to reach with the buttons and knobs easy to manipulate.
The base Tradesman version will equip the Uconnect 3 infotainment system with voice command and 5-inch center screen. There will also be Bluetooth connectivity, rear-seat USB ports, six speakers, an auxiliary audio jack, etc. The equipment list will also include air conditioning, a locking tailgate, push-button start, a rearview camera, cruise control, heated mirrors, and more.
Further upgrading will be possible with optional features including towing mirrors, trailer brake control, a spray-in bedliner, CD player, satellite radio, a locking rear differential, etc. Optionally, the standard vinyl flooring and upholstery can be replaced with the cloth upholstery.
2020 Ram 1500 Tradesman: Powertrains
There shouldn’t be changes in the powertrain range for the 2020 Ram 1500 Tradesman. FCA should add the 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine to the range with power around 260 hp and torque around 442 lb-ft. This engine won’t likely be available in base trim.
The entry-level Tradesman will use a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine assisted by the eTorque, mild-hybrid system. The engine makes 305 horsepower and peak torque of 269 pound-feet. The mild-hybrid system provides additional 90-pound-feet of torque.
The base Ram 1500 will also offer optional 5.7-liter V-8 HEMI engine combined with the eTorque system or not. The engine itself makes 395 horsepower and max torque of 401 pound-feet. The mild-hybrid system boosts the performance with 130 pound-feet of torque.
No matter what engine is used it will be in the pair with the 8-speed automatic transmission. The truck will also offer rear- and all-wheel drive with available rear locking differential. The model will be able to load up to 1, 880 pounds in the cargo bed or for maximum towing of 11, 530 pounds.
The V-6 powered Tradesman will return around 22 mpg combined while with the V-8 engine under the hood will provide up to 19 mpg combined with the mild-hybrid system.
