FCA’s aging heavy-duty truck range is next for the full redesign after the all-new, half-ton Ram 1500 debuted early in the year as the 2019 model. The firm has already been spotted on several locations while testing the next generation of the heavy-towing trucks. We saw the models in the early stage of the development with the current body design but recently more spy photos appeared. The camouflaged Ram 2500 Power Wagon was caught by the spy camera and the 2020 Ram 3500 HD dually was also in front of the camera.
The new heavy-duty Ram 3500 and three-quarter-ton Ram 2500 will be followed by the GM’s twins the Silverado and Sierra HD for the 2020 model year and Ford is also reading some upgrades for its recently redesigned Super Duty lineup.
As for the new Ram 3500, details are still scarce. Still, based on spy photos and latest reports we can draw some conclusions and the same is with the powertrain lineup.
2020 Ram 3500 HD: Design
No official details or teaser images of the new 2020 Ram 3500 HD yet but despite the thick camo on the shoulders of the spotted prototype version, we can already conclude in what direction FCA is going with the new generation HD models. Unsurprisingly, like it was with previous generations and as we saw on the newest Ford HD models, the firm will apply the similar recipe as on the recently all-new light-duty model.
The mix of the lightweight materials will be used for the body panels and the high-strength steel will form the more rigid and capable chassis. The result will be greater capability but with the reduced weight. The models should also gain additional inches of the interior space and the crew cab models will likely offer more rear seat room than ever.
The styling should also evolve in line with the new generation Ram 1500. Ram will switch to the new chapter with the new grille version and more streamlined body. The crosshair grille, a long-running signature of the Ram’s trucks, will go to history and leave the place for the new grille design. The models will also get the new headlights and bumpers. The new hood design will also come with the re-sculpted profile.
As for the interior design, the new heavy-duty models will surely use the same style and layout as the all-new, half-ton Ram. FCA will up the ante with the upgraded materials, more standard equipment and the latest tech. The cabs should also bring more interior comfort thanks to the additional inches and the crew-cab version should improve the rear seat capacity significantly.
The new Ram HD will also come with the latest Uconnect 4 infotainment system and features. Different touchscreen sizes will appear and the largest in the class 12.0-inch option should also be in the equipment list as on the new Ram 1500. There will also be cheaper but durable materials used in lower spec versions and upper grades will add leather upholstery and more luxury features.
The Ram 3500 HD will also return to the game with the new advanced safety systems. Expect most of the safety equipment from the half-ton Ram to appear with the HD models.
2020 Ram 3500 HD: Powertrains
There are no exact details about the powertrain range of the upcoming 2020 Ram 3500 HD. Based on the unofficial sources the new generation Ram HD will return with the familiar engine options but with the improved design and performance.
The current base 5.7-liter V-8 which makes 383 hp and torque of 400 pound-feet won’t be in the new HD versions according to some reports. The 6.4-liter V-8 could become the new base engine and it now makes 410 hp and torque of 429 lb-ft. The new version should improve the fuel efficiency measurements and performance.
We will again get the reliable 6.7-liter Cummins six-cylinder diesel. In its most capable setup with the heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission, this engine now delivers 385 hp and torque of 930 lb-ft. The improvements and possibly upgraded transmission should move the power and torque numbers up and again challenge the class-leading torque.
With all improvements, the new Ram 3500 HD should be capable to haul over 7, 620 pounds and tow over $34k pounds.
2020 Ram 3500 HD: Release, Price
The new 2020 Ram 3500 HD should make the premiere in early 2020. The price should also go slightly upper with all other numbers.
