With the SUV roots, the mid-size SsangYong Musso ute delivers good ride and handling combined with the high interior comfort and refinement. A modern and efficient, small capacity four-cylinder turbodiesel engine and Aisin six-speed automatic transmission provide decent performance and truck matches the class best towing capacity. The new generation SsangYong Musso debuted in Geneva 2018 based on the mid-size Ruxton SUV but the brand has also the modern trends in mind and revealed recently that this truck will get an electrified version in the near future. Many brands have promised recently some kind of the electrified powertrain and the electric Musso version should hit the market in 2020 probably as the 2021 model. The brand promised the range of the two-motor powertrain of around 450 km.
However, before the electric Musso arrives the 2020 SsangYong Musso will return with minimal changes. The model will keep the same engine and capability but could bring a new trim version or the special edition model. There will also be some changes in the equipment organization.
2020 SsangYong Musso: Design
The mid-size Musso uses the body-on-frame shared with the Rexton SUV. The modern design underpinning is formed from the Advanced Strength Steel providing higher structural rigidity and performance with the reduced weight.
The Musso ute shares also the same design language with the stablemate Rexton SUV and two models have the same front-end style. The brand’s so-called Nature Born 3 Motion design language includes the hexagonal grille design with the chrome bar stretching through the middle and swept-back headlights with the attractive signature elements adding also to model’s appearance. The sleek body panels combined with sharp character line and over-fender sculpting give it also a unique appearance. A subtlety sculpted tailgate and nice tailguts define the rear-end design.
The 2020 SsangYong Musso will continue to benefit from the recent redesign and there won’t be notable changes before the next mid-cycle update. The brand should, however, offer new color options and possibly new uniquely styled options.
Inside the cabin of the Musso Ute, buyers will also enjoy in the SUV-like design, detailing and comfort. The center stack will house the modern infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto compatibility and more physical controls will take a position below. The truck will also come with plenty of refinement and comfort features as well as modern tech equipment.
The base Musso will use 17-inch wheels, fabric upholstery, lane departure warning, Bluetooth connectivity, multifunction steering wheel, etc. The next trim will add multi-media 8-inch touchscreen with smartphone compatibility, daytime running lights, 18-inch wheels, ventilated and heated front steals, etc. The model will also rely on the safety systems such as lane change assist, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, lane change assist, front and rear parking assist.
The top trim will up the sophistication level with the leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, 20-inch alloy wheels, surround vision system, etc. The model will also include a larger 9.2-inch touchscreen with integrated navigation.
2020 SsangYong Musso: Powertrain
Under the hood of the next 2020 SsangYong Musso will sit the brand’s turbocharged diesel engine found also in the Rexton SUV. A 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel unit will come in the combination with either six-speed manual or optional Aisin automatic transmission. The engine will produce 181 horsepower at 4000 rpm and the peak torque of 400 Nm from 1800-2800 rpm.
The Korean mid-size pickup truck will also offer the selectable four-wheel drive system with the low- and high range which directs power toward rear wheels engaging the front wheels when required.
The modern design chassis and the coil spring rear suspension setup will also ensure balanced ride quality. The truck will also be capable of towing up to 3,5 tons with the payload capacity of 1 ton.
2020 SsangYong Musso: Release, Price
The 2020 SsangYong Musso will challenge more recognizable and proven models on the market such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi L200 when goes on sale late in the year. The well-equipped and refined model will also try to attract the buyers with a competitive price with a starting point below £20k in the UK.
