The proliferation of the pickup trucks continues worldwide and modern utes are getting many forms and premium levels. The high-performance versions are also in the focus of the truck buyers.
The VW Amarok is a representative of the modern, mid-size truck with plenty of refinement and standard equipment. This truck handles well on the road and its potent V-6 turbodiesel engine provides among the strongest performance in the class. It proved as the good decision when the current-generation Amarok arrived with the V-6 turbocharged diesel engine instead of the widely-used four-cylinder unit. In its most potent version, this engine makes 258 hp but the talks in the industry suggest that VW may have another more powerful version in the mind.
Reportedly, the next model year could bring a high-performance 2020 VW Amarok V-8 Edition with the mighty bi-turbo V-8 engine under the hood. This is the step VW already made with the all-new Touareg SUV and we would like to see the V-8-powered Amarok.
However, VW hasn’t commented on the rumors about the V-8 Amarok and this outcome seems highly unlikely. VW confirmed however that the next generation Amarok will be based on the Ford Ranger as two car giants have plans to share vehicle technology including the mid-size ute platform.
2020 VW Amarok V-8 Edition: Performance
VW hasn’t hinted the arrival of the 2020 VW Amarok V-8 Edition and the test model signaling the introduction of the V-8 powered Amarok hasn’t been spotted on the road either.
Based on the rumors in the industry, the Amarok V-8 Edition should use a similar recipe as the recently redesigned Touareg SUV which gained a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 powered version. The engine, also found under the hood of the Audi SQ7 makes 420 hp and max torque of 663 pound-feet in this application. It would make the Amarok extremely capable and with this engine the truck would need around 6 seconds to hit 62 mph.
With this engine, Amarok should also get the upgraded chassis and suspension components as well as a more capable braking system. The model would use an 8-speed automatic transmission and permanent 4Motion 4WD.
If this version sees the light of day, it won’t be the first V-8 powered Amarok. The Amarok V-8 Passion Desert designed by tuning house MTM has a VW’s 4.2-liter bi-turbo engine under the hood. It provides 410 horsepower and peak torque of 686 pound-feet from 2000 rpm. This version uses also the upgraded front and rear discs combined with off-road tires and improved coilover suspension.
2020 VW Amarok V-8 Edition: Design
The spy photos of the 2020 VW Amarok V-8 Edition haven’t appeared yet to supports the claim about its arrival.
Based on the rumors, with the mighty engine under the hood, the model should also feature a unique appearance. The mighty Amarok V-8 should boost its appearance with the wider and uniquely painted fender flares and addition underbody protection. The grille should also have special treatment as well as the front and rear bumpers.
Adding to the appearance of the model should also be the 20-inch alloy wheels and special body color treatment.
The cabin of the Amarok V-8 Edition should also come with the unique design and well equipped.
The truck should use Alcantara surfaces combined with contrasting carbon fiber and bright surfaces. The components of the model should also be a premium sound system and the brand’s latest infotainment unit with sat-nav and smartphone support.
The seats used in the model should provide additional body support and power functions while the sports, multi-function steering wheel should also be inside the cabin. The truck would also equip the safety systems such as automatic emergency braking and possibly new ones.
2020 VW Amarok V-8 Edition: Arrival, Price
The introduction of the 2020 VW Amarok V-8 Edition would surely draw additional attention on the already popular and proven Amarok truck but there is no solid proof yet that this version will appear.
As per rumors, the twin-turbo V-8-powered Amarok should appear in front of the public eye by the end of this year. If it arrives, the price tag would be much higher than on the current most capable Amarok. It could be priced above $80k.
