The pickup trucks continue their domination in the US and the truckmakers continue to increase the number of available options to almost uncountable. A recently redesigned, light-duty Silverado can be had in eight trim levels and there are five engine options to choose from. The truck can be configured as the basic towing machine or with a high level of sophistication and comfort.
The truckmakers have also the focus on the off-road specialized versions and Chevy offers Trail Boss models with more off-road bits. However, rumors are circulating that Chevy might have another option in mind and we are speaking about the on-road-optimized 2021 Chevy Silverado SS version.
Chevy offered the SS-badged, light-duty Silverado in 2003 with sport-bits appearance, on-road-tuned suspension, strong V-8 engine and specific interior details. Rumors suggesting that the fourth-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 might get a similar treatment but solid evidence hasn’t yet appeared to support this claim. Chevy hasn’t commented on the speculation about the SS-badged Chevy Silverado and the prototype hasn’t also been caught.
2021 Chevy Silverado SS: Design
The fourth-generation, light-duty Chevy Silverado arrived with substantial structural and visual upgrades for the 2019 model year. The model is also available with the off-road-optimized hardware and appearance. The model should receive the next round of upgrades for the 2022 season.
However, there are rumors and renderings suggesting the possible design of the 2021 Chevy Silverado SS. The model should use the half-ton, extend cab Chevy Silverado as the base and add multiple sports bits and pieces. The model should adopt a more aggressive grille design mixed with a sportier front bumper with additional air inlets.
The on-road-tuned suspension would keep the model lower to the ground compared to the regular versions. A part of the model’s identity would also be specific wheels design and low-profile tires. If the SS version appears as the rumors suggest, the model should also come with unique headlight and taillights with blacked-out bits.
The rear would also feature unique details on the tailgate mixed with a sportier rear bumper. There would also be unique badging and decals if the model sees the light of the day.
If the rumors turn out to be true, the new 2021 Chevy Silverado SS should also get sport-style, in-cab upgrades. There should be a sport-style steering wheel and front seats. The model should also come with the unique trim inserts on the dash, console, door panels, etc. The truck would also apple unique upholstery and come with the brand’s newest tech and safety gear.
The model should be available with both cloth and leather upholstery. The equipment list should include an 8-inch touchscreen interface, premium sound system, navigation, etc. Buyers should optionally have at disposal features such as the heated and ventilated seats and safety packages.
2021 Chevy Silverado SS: Performance
The actual, fourth-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 offers five engine options and three transmissions to choose from. Buyers can also get off-road-specialized versions. The engine range starts with a 285-hp 4.3-liter V-6 engine. Buyers can switch to the 310-hp 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit or a more potent 5.3-liter V-8 unit good for 355 hp. At the top of the power chain is a 6.2-liter V-8 engine good for 420 hp. There is also a 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6 unit for a better fuel economy.
If the 2021 Chevy Silverado SS hits the road, the engine of choice should be a 6.2-liter V-8 unit eventually with the upgraded power and torque ratings. The engine would be in the mix with the reconfigured 10-speed automatic transmission. The model would also get some chassis and suspension tuning with the on-road-focused optimization.
2021 Chevy Silverado SS: Release, Price
With no prototype version on the road and with no hints from Chevy, the revival of the Silverado SS nameplate is highly unlikely for the 2021 model year or any time soon. Rumors continue spreading about the reintroduction of the on-road-focused half-ton Silverado SS year in year out but solid evidence hasn’t appeared yet. There are also speculations about the arrival of the Ford Lighting and Type R-treated Honda Ridgeline.
As the rumors suggest, the 2021 Chevy Silverado SS should appear in the first half of 2021. The price could be from low $40, 000.
